Sputnik 1 was the world’s first artificial Earth satellite. The Soviet Union launched it into an elliptical low Earth orbit on 4 October 1957. It was a 58 cm (23 in) diameter polished metal sphere, with four external radio antennas to broadcast radio pulses. With the launch, the Soviets also kick-started the world’s fascination with outer space, other worlds and aliens.
Thomas Glenn Holidays captures the retro Mid-Century modern vibe with this 120 mm white glitter orb. Black bedazzled “sputniks’ encircle the ornament.
